Balancing Act strives to be a resource for teenage girls, however the experiences and insights discussed on the podcast are not exclusively relevant to "teenage girls".
Life is a balancing act. Every day, we must juggle school, work, relationships, physical health, emotional health, mental health, family, sports, extracurricular activities, college applications - and so much more. And it sometimes seems like we are expected to perform this circus act while standing on one leg at the edge of a cliff in the middle of a thunderstorm. Life is a balancing “act” because it is rare for the image of a “perfect balance” to be anything more than a convincing facade. You never know when things may tip off balance, hurdling you down a dark, slippery path of anxiety, social pressure, depression, stress, and eating disorders.
I hope that Balancing Act will help to illuminate the widespread, everyday struggles of teenagers, girls especially. The first step towards navigating these challenges is to acknowledge their existence. Too often, teenager's struggles feel taboo: our challenges are stigmatized, ignored, or collectively accepted as “the norm”.
Balancing Act strives to provide a raw, relatable, and educational space to support all people (teenagers especially) who struggle with eating disorders, body image, anxiety, depression, feeling at peace, and finding balance. Balancing Act will highlight diverse guest stories of struggle and growth to show listeners that they are not alone. Moorea will also interview experts in fields relating to teenager's physical, mental, and emotional health to provide teens with knowledge and practical advice. And she won't stray away from the tough questions (that we all search on incognito mode instead of asking)!!
Finally, Moorea shares her personal experiences with anxiety, depression, an eating disorder, and other obstacles she has faced (and continues to face) as a teenage girl in the modern world.
Balancing Act acknowledges that a "perfect" balance is impossible to reach. However, life is not a journey you need to navigate alone.
The full name of the podcast is "Balancing Act: Life and Struggles of a Teenage Girl". But why?
I chose to name my podcast “Balancing Act” because I believe that life is a balancing act. As humans, we must preform a balancing act of responsibilities, goals, and societal expectations. We are constantly working to strike a "perfect" balance, and we are told that if we reach this ideal state, we'll be more productive, happier, and at peace.
Life is also a balancing “act” because it is rare for the image of a “perfect balance” to be anything more than a convincing facade. While it can be helpful to strive for a well balanced life, anyone who promotes the idea of "perfect" mental health, the "perfect" diet, or the "perfect" morning routine is either completely delulu or feeding you a whole lot of B.S.
Breaking down the second half of the name: "Life and Struggles of a Teenage Girl”. I’ve chosen this name for my podcast because I have created this podcast as a resource for teen girls to help them to better navigate their lives. I chose the word "life" because I want to cover all aspects of teen life - the happy, funny, ugly, dramatic, devastating - all of it. Not just the "struggle". "Life" is complex, and so are our experiences as teen girls. This podcast will discuss obstacles that I have personally encountered as well as those from a diverse group of guests.
The term “Teen Girl” is in the name of the podcast, however, the topics discussed are not only relevant to teenagers, and they aren’t only relevant to people who identify as “Girls”. For instance, this podcast covers eating disorders, which can affect anyone no matter their race, ethnicity, age, gender, socioeconomic status, shape, and size.
This podcast focuses on obstacles frequently encountered by teenage girls, and engages with these challenges from the lens of a teenage girl. While this podcast explicitly targets teen girls, it is relevant to anyone who experiences similar struggles, or who wants to learn more about these topics to support a loved one.
Navigating life is hard. And it's even harder when you feel alone.
I’ve struggled with perfectionism for much of my life, and as I entered into my pre-teen and teen years, I began to struggle with anxiety and an eating disorder. In middle school, my struggle with anorexia almost led to hospitalization. Everyone’s journey with mental health or an eating disorder is different, but all experiences are equally valid.
Eating disorder recovery is not linear, and if you are battling an eating disorder it's important to give yourself grace - because recovery is hard. By 9th grade, I had been in a healthier place for over almost two years. However, in 2023 my eating disorder relapsed, and at the beginning of 10th grade I became depressed - it felt like all of my energy was being spent on just making it through the day. I started medication and have been working with a therapist and nutritionist. I’ve been doing better, but like I said - recovery is not linear. There are still days where I struggle severely with my anxiety, depression, and eating disorder.
I started this podcast in early 2024 because I want to create the resource I wish I had in middle school when I was struggling with my eating disorder, and last year at the height of my depression. This podcast is also a part of my personal healing journey as it allows me to process my experiences and to help others in their own journeys.
I know I am not alone in my struggles as a teenage girl (and human in general), and I hope this podcast can help anyone who is going through similar challenges. I want to create a safe space where our struggles are shared, heard, and validated, and where we can find practical advice and expert knowledge to help our community to cope with life's balancing act.
